RENO, Nev. - Hastily, though aptly named, the Idaho Pick-up Gals have taken over first place in Division 3 Teams competition at the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.
The quickly-thrown-together "Gals" totaled 2,501 to lead Division 3 (651-745 average) over Just Marked of Oakland, Calif., which took the top spot three weeks earlier with 2,458.
Until their Reno appearance, the Pocatello women never had bowled together - thus their name.
"A friend went on-line and noticed that an entire team had to drop out of the tournament, so she called around and lined up four of us," said team captain Becky Galavan. "We knew each other from the bowling center, but we never hung out together."
Still one bowler short, the Pick-up Gals "picked her up" when they got to the National Bowling Stadium. As it turned out, Yvonne Rosario-Nash from New York proved to be a fortuitous find, since she led the team with a 608 series. Others included Galavan (427); Iona Blackhawk, in her first year of bowling (473); Victoria Kingzio (554); and Tina Steffens (439).
