CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - Jack Jurek proved Friday that good things come to those who wait.
Jurek advanced to his first Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour championship round in almost seven years as he defeated Ryan Shafer, four-games-to-two, in the round of 8 in the 2005 Empire State Classic at Spare Time - Clifton Park.
Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.) will be looking for his first title in 10 years, eight months and 23 days, which would be the third-longest stretch between titles in Tour history.
"It's been 20 years that I've been out here. Even though it hasn't been great, there's a love I have for being out here," said Jurek, who earned his exemption for 2005-06 by leading last season's PBA Central Region Point Rankings. "It was starting to be a big question as to whether I could get back to this level. It's been so long since I was on TV I think it was still in black and white."
Jurek knocked off two fellow New Yorkers on his way to the finals in Shafer (Elmira, N.Y.) and Brad Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.) in the round of 32.
Jurek will face Chris Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) in the first semifinal. Collins will be making his first career television appearance as he came back from an 0-3 deficit to defeat Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.), 4-3. Machuga had won his first 11 games in match play until Collins beat him in four-straight games.
Mike Wolfe (New Albany, Ind.) advanced to his second championship round of the season by defeating Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas), 4-1. He will face Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) in the second semifinal. Scroggins, who defeated Tommy Delutz Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.), 4-2, takes over the top spot in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with Friday's win.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from Spare Time - Clifton Park Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. EST.
