ARLINGTON, Texas -- Bill Dwyre, sports editor of the Los Angeles Times from 1981 to 2006 will be a featured speaker at the Bowl Expo seminar on how bowling centers can increase media coverage.
Tom Clark, USBC director of communications will lead the discussion. Clark was named the 2005 Bowlers Journal Person of the Year for his efforts in increasing media awareness of bowling, was an assignment editor in the USA Today sports department (2000-2005) and previously was a reporter and editor at the Syracuse Herald-Journal, Potomac (Woodbridge, Va.) News, Manassas (Va.) Journal Messenger and Hickory (N.C.) Daily Record newspapers.
Currently executive sports editor of the L.A. Times, Dwyre was also sports editor at the Milwaukee Journal. A native of Sheboygan, Wis., graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 with a B.A. degree in communications/arts.
Among Dwyre's many awards are the Subiaco Arkansas Academy's Literary Award of Merit; Powerade Sports Story of the Year from the National Sportscasters & Sportswriters Association; Red Smith Award from the Associated Press Sports Editors Association for service to sports journalism; Editor of the Year for 1984 by the National Press Foundation; Sportswriter of the Year in Wisconsin; Los Angeles Times Editorial Award for "sustained excellence by an individual in any department", and the National Headliner Award.
Dwyre is past president of the Associated Press Sports Editors Association, and he is a member of the Board of Directors of Casa Colina Hospital for Rehabilitation, Pomona, Calif.; and the Advisory Board, John Galvin Program in Journalism, Democracy and Ethics, University of Notre Dame.
The seminar, "How to Increase Media Coverage," will be held Tuesday, June 27, 1:15 - 2:45 p.m. in Pavilion 1 at the Las Vegas Hilton during the 2006 International Bowl Expo education program.
