Hi Everyone!
Thanks to everyone who came to our first Pacific Northwest event of the season, at Magic Lanes last weekend! We appreciated the fine turnout, especially given the scheduling difficulties, and we hope everyone who attended had a great time and will spread the word about our future events! Be sure to visit our website today for all the final results, complete stats, and so much more!
The Tour rolls on with two great events this weekend. On Saturday, we'll visit venerable Cactus Bowl, home of the Giant Pickle, with a 12:30 PM start. There is major construction (what a surprise) on I-10 through central Tucson, so be sure to allow plenty of travel time, as we don't delay our start times to be fair to our host centers. This is our first Tucson event of the season, so Tucsonans, show us what you're made of with a great turnout!
Then, on Sunday, it's a DOUBLE POINTS event in the Mojave Conference, at the beautiful Strike Zone at Sunset Station, with a 9 AM start time in Henderson, NV. Double points events have huge impacts on the season-long points races, so don't miss this event, and tell your bowling friends to be there or be square (has anyone said that since 1975?)!
Average Cutoff for 5-Person Baker Soon! On Sunday December 9 we have our first ever 5-person Team Baker event in Glendale, AZ. If you don't have a flyer for it, you can view all the info on our schedule page. One of the 'twists' of the event is that at least one bowler on your team must have an entering average of 180 or less as of 10/15, which is after this weekend. Be sure to check out the average page on the Stats section of the website once it's updated next week to help make a great team!
Arizona High School Bowling- Do It! Arizona is continuing its efforts to advance bowling from a 'club' to a varsity sport. JBT fully supports all high school bowling- we had it back east growing up, and its team-oriented competition is a great complement to JBT's singles-focused events. Varsity bowling exists in New Mexico, Nevada, and Washington in our area, so JBT bowlers from those regions can tell you about it as well. The note below is from Kris Zahn, who is spearheading the campaign in Arizona:
Hi everyone! This communication has two goals:
The first is to correct the misinformation that high school team players are not permitted to bowl outside of the high school program. JBT and youth league participation IS permitted.
At the present time the Arizona Interscholastic Association does not recognize bowling as a varsity sport. Therefore, AIA Rule #14.4 NONSCHOOL PARTICIPATION, specifically 14.4.1, does not apply.
AIA 14.4.1 A student who is a member of a school team shall not practice or compete with any other group or club, organization, association, etc., in that sport during the interscholastic season of competition. This rule applies to team sports only, which are football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, track relay and swimming relay teams. For purposes of this rule, the interscholastic season of competition shall begin with the first regularly scheduled game and conclude with that particular team's final game.
(This rule, as well as the entire constitution and bylaws, can be viewed at www.aiaonline.org. Once you are on the home page, choose the "About AIA" tab at the top. A drop down menu will offer the selection of constitution and bylaws as the fifth selection.)
Although this has NO effect on high school bowlers in any way it is also interesting to note that this rule, as written, only pertains to TEAM sports!
The other goal is to solicit assistance. Many schools have indicated interest in the program. However, student interest is imperative. We are requesting students to meet with the school administrators (Activities Directors, Athletic Directors, Principals) to express their interest in creating a HSB program. Parents and adult friends are requested to contact the schools because as taxpayers they have more influence. We need the most assistance in the Phoenix area.
The Az High School Bowling program is sponsored and supported by the bowling proprietors. As we create program, there is NO COST to the schools. There are no lineage fees for interscholastic practice or competitive meets. The students only pay applicable activities fees, if any, and are requested to assist with fundraising.
If you make any type of contact with your local high school, please forward that information to Kris Zahn at kris@kriszahn.com or 480-663-3128. She will then follow up with the school.
Please visit www.azhighschoolbowling.com for more information. Thank You!
More schedule stuff: Thanks for the input regarding the potential schedule dates for the rest of the season. We're applying your extra information and working hard now to put together the rest of the season. It's pretty much last call to let us know if any of the dates listed conflict with anything else. Miss that email? It's on the website's message board, under "previous online updates"!
More Gold Stuff: Some good input from folks on this one, so thanks very much- again, you guys help shape the Tour! So, we have our decisions:
1) We'll run a few Gold qualifiers during the season. The only ones for sure so far are: December 1, Canoga Park, 5 PM; December 1, Canoga Park, Midnight, and December 27, Texas Station, 6 PM (during the Main Event).
2) It was pointed out to me that it was an awkward situation for me to be the "middleman" for a program that I'm ambivalent about... so, instead of being the 'blanket sanction' for Gold events, I'll help you certify your OWN Gold events. You'll own the certification, and be responsible for all results, etc. It's not at all difficult to do- it takes filling out a few forms, sending them in to Wisconsin, and getting the 6 boys or 4 girls minimum you need to run a qualifier.
So......... if you want to run a qualifier in addition to the ones listed above, just let me know and we'll get you started!
PHEW! Lots of stuff as always going on in the mad, beautiful world that is JBT.... GET IN ON THE FUN!!! We'll see you in Tucson and Las Vegas this weekend, or other events in the near future!
