VERNON HILLS, Ill. - Jeff Carter erased a 19-pin deficit with a 256 in his final game to lead the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Qualifying Round for the 2005 Chicago Classic with a 1,761 seven-game pinfall Wednesday at Hawthorn Lanes.
Carter (Springfield, Ill.) averaged 240.50 over his first four games before he fired the day's only 300 in his fifth game.
"I've had a lot of success [at Hawthorn Lanes]," said Carter. "This is my favorite stop on Tour. I've had good luck here and I look forward to coming here."
Hawthorn Lanes is the site of Carter's highest career finish in a Denny's PBA Tour event. He took 6th in the 2003 Miller High Life Open, falling to Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) in the best-of-seven games match play round of 8, four-games-to-two.
Wednesday, Carter outpaced amateur Derek Eoff (Greenfield, Wis.) who had the lead heading into the final game. Eoff, who had recorded a 290 in game six, shot 225 in his final game and finished 2nd with 1,749.
Jim Tomek Jr. (Camp Hill, Pa.) was 3rd with 1,696 and will be appearing in his third standard Tour event of the season. Left-hander Eric Forkel (Las Vegas) took 4th with 1,655 while the next-highest PBA member was Lennie Boresch Jr. (Kenosha, Wis.), who was 6th overall with 1,574 and earned the final spot into Thursday's round of 64.
The top four PBA members and the top amateur advance to Thursday's round of 64. The round of 64 features two seven-game qualifying blocks, after which the top 32 advance to single-elimination match play.
The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final rounds live on Sunday, Nov. 27 at Noon CST.
