The best senior bowlers in the world will return to Reno, Nev., when the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters is conducted at the National Bowling Stadium July 11-15. It will mark the first time the event has been held in Reno since 2001.
The USBC Senior Masters features PBA Senior professionals and non-professional USBC members age 50 and older who will compete for a projected $140,000 prize fund.
After three five-game qualifying blocks, the top 63 scorers will join defending champion Vince Mazzanti Jr. of Levittown, Pa., in double-elimination match play to determine the winner.
At the 2005 Senior Masters, held at the Suncoast in Las Vegas last June, Mazzanti defeated three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year and 2001 Senior Masters champion Bob Glass of Lawrence, Kan., 697-627 to win the title in the three-game championship match.
"As one of the sport's premier venues, the National Bowling Stadium will again showcase one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world for senior bowlers," USBC Chief Tournament Officer Roseann Kuhn said. "Holding the USBC Senior Masters at the Stadium also enables us to accommodate a much larger field, allowing more bowlers to compete."
Having the event at the National Bowling Stadium will allow for a maximum field of 468 participants. The Senior Masters is open to all USBC adult members age 50 and older who hold a minimum 190 average. A Senior Masters pro-am will be conducted July 9 with practice and sweepers conducted July 10.
The Senior Masters was first conducted in 1993 in Tulsa, Okla. As one of the most prestigious events in senior bowling, the tournament is a perennial meeting place for senior bowling's strongest field. Other past champions include stars such as Dave Davis, Gary Dickinson, Dave Soutar, Pete Couture and Dale Eagle.
Entry forms will be available on bowl.com by mid-January. Entry forms and information may also be obtained by contacting Tournament Director Tom Boedecker@bowl.com at (800) 514-2695, ext. 3415.
